Abstract
This paper examines the properties of the synthetic polymer material polyethylene terephthalate to reflect, absorb, and scatter radio waves across various frequency ranges. The use of durable polyethylene terephthalate films to protect objects and personnel from detection by non-ionizing radiation is substantiated. The transmission, reflection, and scattering of radio waves by polyethylene terephthalate films with radio-absorbing fillers is studied. A setup for conducting experimental studies in an echo-absorbing room is developed. It is found that mesh coatings made of interwoven matted polyethylene terephthalate tapes reduce radio wave reflection by more than tenfold compared to smooth film. Polyethylene terephthalate filled with stainless steel microparticles (up to 1% of the polymer volume) exhibits minimal reflectivity. It has been determined that mesh coverings woven from strips of this material no more than 25 microns thick in the frequency range of 1 to 10 GHz attenuate radio wave reflections from the protected object by more than 40 times, or by 16 decibels. Experiments have proven that lightweight, flexible, and tear-resistant coverings made of the polymer polyethylene terephthalate can be successfully used to protect objects and personnel from detection by non-ionizing radiation.
